-- Pease Air Force Base with four entries took four wins out of the 10 categories in the Eighth Air Force's Central Division Talent Contest at Dow Saturday, a record tied only by Westover which also took four first place spots with 10 entries; Eighth Air Force had personnel from Pease, Westover, Plattsburgh, Loring. and Lockbourne (includes some amazing pictures)
-- Dow's featherweight Tom Mathis and three other Air Force leather slingers will begin punching some of the best boxers in the nation for the right to represent the United States in the Pan-American Games

Joe is receptionist at the personnel building while airman Kramer is Wing Historian. Just goes to show that short or tall, they're both doing a "King Size" job for the United States Air Force. The show will be held at the Officers' Club on August 23 just prior to the regular Sunday evening buffet. Admission is $1.00 for adults, children free. -- Headline: 194 Capehart Units Now Ready For AF Occupancy --- Suddenly! Good News. The acceptance inspection of Capehart Housing is progressing in a satisfactory manner. The purchase date for the housing units has been set for 2 September 1959. The first families will be able to move in on 8 September 1959. Every effort has been made to match the family with the apartment, two or three bedroom apartments as required.
-- Page Two shows blueprints for the Capehart apartments as well as detailing the selection process for those being awarded a Capehart apartment.
-- Faulty picture tube is replaced in a television receiver at Personnel Services newest Hobby facility, the Electronics Hobby shop. Equipment is on hand to help you check radio, TV and high fi equipment and discount prices are offered on replacement parts. NCOIC of the shop Tsgt. Lowen Perkins is on duty at the shop from 5: 30 till 9: 30 p. m. each evening at 9 till 1 on Saturday (photograph).

-- Richard W. Higgins. a native of Bangor, maintenance supervisor of the 42d Armament and Electronics Maintenance Squadron, Loring AFB, Maine, has been selected as Strategic Airman for the Year 1959 (includes photograph).
-- Noreen French, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George M. French, Orland, Maine, and A-2c Lee J. Campbell of the 4060th Organizational Squadron, were united in marriage in a Protestant rite double ring ceremony conducted at the base chapel on August 17 at 7 p. m. by Chaplain (Captain) Norman G. Folkers.

-- -The first formal retreat ceremony this year at Dow was held by men of the 4060th Combat Defense Squadron in front of Group Headquarters building. Major Lloyd R. Bishop, Commander of the Combat Defense Squadron and Dow's Provost Marshall, took the first step in hopes that other squadrons will follow. The squadron held a retreat ceremony Monday and Wednesday and they will hold another one today (photograph).

-- Pictured above are four sergeants of the 75th Fighter Interceptor Squadron who recently gave blood to help a small five year old girl from Hodgdon, Maine survive a very serious operation. Shown standing by a 7-101B Voodoo (left to right) they are T/Sgt. George B. Caron, SMS Charles H. Marsh, Jr., T/Sgt. William J. Kessack, and S/Sgt. Charles A. Caron; all are maintenance men for the 75th FIS. T/Sgt. Caron is well known in boxing circles as the popular "Babe McCarran," middleweight champion of the state of Mame. A letter received by the information Office, DAFB, expresses the appreciation of the little girl's mother for the expeditious response for blood donations by these men. "Little Judy Simpson is home and happy, after a very delicate five hour, heart surgery. The operation became to save her life. Now she breathes easily and will be able to play normally as other youngsters do. So Judy says "Thanks Boys" to T/Sgt. George B. Caron and his wonderful friends from Dow Field, who gave the blood that made the operation possible." Judy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Simpson, residents of Hodgdon, Maine (photograph).

-- A 79-year-old Camden man, Everett Crandall, was airlifted from the top of Mount Beattie by a helicopter from Dow Air Force Base, Tuesday afternoon almost 2r hours after he began a climb that took him within 400 yards of the peak (includes photograph).

The new fighter squadron, which is now changing over from the old F-89 Scorpion to the F-101 Voodoo, is expected to be completely moved and in operation here at Dow in the near future (photograph).

-- Upon arrival at Dow last week the first F-101 Voodoo was given a warm welcome by Miss Suzanne M. Jones, who has been selected Miss Voodoo for the 75th FIS. The aircraft, which is the first supersonic plane to be stationed in Maine, was flown to Dow from St. Louis, Mo., by Major James S. Simon, left, Operations Officer of the 75th and Capt. James R. -- Dow's Personnel section received their first IBM machines recently. Here, SSgt. J. Roger D. Theriault, NCIIC of the Machine Shop, is seen using the printing card punch machine. This new machine saves time, money and is more efficient for posting of records (photograph).
-- A bicycle parade was held last week on the playground of Dow's Youth Center. Joseph Caouette, left, took first prize, David Beaver, center, second, and Sharon Fitzpatrick third. -- Discussing plans for the reorganization of Dow under the new deputy commanders concept this week were left to right, Lt. Col. Robert C. Householder, Major Arthur Nikas, Lt. Col. James R. Curran, and Col. William G. Ivey all of Eighth Air Force except Col. Curran who is one of Dow's project officers for the reorganization. Col. Ivey, who is head of the assistant reorganization team, arrived at Dow with his crew Monday. The new setup is scheduled to be completed July l (includes photograph).
-- Captain James R. Turpen has been assigned as Detachment Commander of the 75th Fighter Interceptor Squadron now arriving at Dow AFB (photograph).
-- Recognition was recently given to A/ 2C Salvador Domingues, 4060th Installations Sq. when he was selected as squadron Airman of the Month for April. In addition to the plaque shown here being presented by 1st. Lt. Thomas W. Aselton, Sq. Commander, Airman Dominguez will receive a three day vacation at Dow Pines for himself and his family. The cabin fee will be paid out of the squadron fund (photograph).
-- Lee Bemis and Everett Poll of Dow AFB pose with their soap box racer he intends to enter in tomorrow's state wide competition in Brewer. This is the 12th annual Bangor Daily News-Chevrolet Soap Box Derby and the winner in this contest will go to Akron to compete in the nation wide contest. A total of 375 boys are entered in the races (photograph).

-- "Dow Air Force Base took seven out of eleven awards as a result of the Seventh Semi-Annual Facilities Improvement Inspection," announced Colonel George W. R. Zethren, Wing Commander, at the Division Commander's Call held last Friday in the Base Service Club. Dow had the best BOQ, best airmen's dormitories, best visitors' quarters, best overall facilities, most improved airmen's dormitories, most improved visitors' quarters and the most improved overall facility.

-- Cover Story: The era of Capehart housing comes into being here on July 1 as nearly 200 Dowmen and their families move into the first increment of the 530-unit development. Applications are now being accepted at the Base Housing Office. In announcing the availability of the first units, Lt. Col. William A. Crawford, Base Commander, also outlined the procedure which will be used in assigning the quarters to eligible personnel. "Selections of personnel, officers and airmen, will be made on a rank and date of rank basis," Colonel Crawford said. All officers, warrant officers. NCOs and AlC with seven or more years service may apply."

-- Double Honors were recently awarded to the crew of Captain Herman Piner, 71st ARS. The crew was named Crew of the Month and at the same time upgraded to Combat Ready status. -- The Thunderbirds, the official USAF supersonic precision flying team, announced as performing at Dow in a few days
-- Members of the Dow AFB Color Guard who will lead the Downeast Air Fair parade this coming Saturday in downtown Bangor. Left to right members are, A/ 10 Docite Michard, SSgt. Fredric Snowman, SSgt. George Snyder, and A/3C Robert Ortlieb. The parade will assemble on Broadway Boulevard and proceed down State Street hill, right to Post Office Square, left on Central Street, cross Hammond Street to Main Street, by the reviewing stand at, junction of Broad and Main Streets, continue up Main Street to disbanding area. The parade will be one of the features of the Dow Downeast Air Fair being held in conj unction with the Bangor's 125th birthday celebration (includes photograph)
-- Pasting a decalon a bike after having taught a two-hour course on bicycle safety last Saturday is Robert A. Gagne of the Base Safety Office. Kids who took the course were left to right, John Blanchard, Frank Thrower, Donald Carigan, Robert Needham, Thomas Knowles, Steve Cook. Donald Donneau, and in the center is Terry Knowles. Some of the subjects covered during the course were bike ridng on city streets. bicycle safety hazards to look for and the importance of only one boy or girl to a bike. Before completion of the course the class had to maneuver a bicycle through an obstacle course and the bikes had to be inspected for sound steering devices and good brakes. Mr. Gagne announced that another course of this type would be held immediately after school was out (includes photograph)

-- About 50,000 civilians visited Dow during the four-day Downeast Air Fair (many photographs).
-- Dow Downeast Air Fair was the class "C" horse show held on base. Here Mrs. Gordon Briggs (L) an entrant in the show, talks informally with Senator Margaret Chase Smith, center, (R-Maine) and Colonel George W R. Zethren, Dow's Wing Commander. Even though the weather was poor with rain most of the day, many spectators remained until the closing events (included photograph).
-- New Cessnas purchased this week by the SAC Aero Club at Dow finds Lt. Col. William A. Crawford, Base Commander, being checked out by the club president 1st Lt. Frank J. Almeter. In addition to the T-34 the Dow club purchased two new Cessna 172's and a Cessna 150, thus building their fleet up to an all time high of four aircraft (includes photograph).
-- Mr. Cornelius Sullivan, President of Sullivan's Ford Sales in Bangor, presents four keys to Maj or Robert S. Fitzgerald, leader of the Air Force's precision flying team, The Thunderbirds. These keys fitted a Ford Thunderbird and three Galaxies loaned to the Thunderbirds for personal transportation during their stay at Dow.
