Bangor Hydro Electric Company Letter Addressed to Company C.E.O in the Year 2076
Robert N. Haskell
Robert N. Haskell, Chairman of the Board and long-time employee of the Bangor Hydro Electric Company, wrote this letter which is included in a time capsule buried in Bangor to be opened in 2076. The letter covers the history of the Bangor Hydro Electric Company from 1887 to 1976. Mr. Haskell served a famously short five-day term as Governor in Maine in early 1959.
Letter found in the collected papers of the Bangor Hydro Electric Company housed here at Bangor Public Library. We feel the benefits outweigh the drawbacks of releasing this letter 58 years before its author's suspected it to be read.

Bangor Hydro-Electric Company Regenerative Type Gas Turbine Installed
Bangor Hydro-Electric Company and Paul F. Kruse
Opening Paragraphs:
"The Bangor Hydro-Electric Co has recently completed the installation of the first regenerative type of gas turbine unit to go into central station service in this country. Operation of the unit was begun on Oct. 30, 1950.
Increased over-all efficiency is expected from the installation in comparison with non-regenerative equipment. This is due to utilization of a substantial part of the residual heat in the turbine exhaust to preheat the compressed air before it enters the combustion chambers."
Article written by Paul F. Kruse, who was the Chief Engineer of the Bangor Hydro-Electric Company. Article is reprinted from the January 1, 1951, issue of Electrical World, produced by General Electric Company.

John R. Graham and the Bangor Railway and Electric Company
Bangor Hydro-Electric Company and Edward M. Graham
"The story of the Bangor Hydro-Electric Company is more than an account of a successful enterprise. In its growth and development is reflected the history of a vigorous and changing world. It is the story of the State of Maine at the threshold of the Twentieth Century, at a time when the slow march towards industrial consolidation had become a rush. Furthermore it is a story of the men who pioneered and visualized this changing world. And among the pioneers in the Electrical Industry in the early part of the Century, John R. Graham played a most active role. He played this role, moreover, when he was no longer a young man. Approaching middle age, the founder of a lucrative and still flourishing shoe manufacturing business, Graham turned to the young world of rapid transit and electrical power -- a world in which he was to achieve outstanding accomplishment."
Edward M. Graham
This work provides a great overview and biography of John R. Graham, an innovator of and eventual president of the Bangor Railway and Electric Company, which would become the Bangor Hydro-Electric Company.
Edward M. Graham, son of John, later became president of the company as well. Edward presented these words at the 1950 Maine Luncheon of the Newcomen Society of New England, held at the Penobscot Valley Country Club in Bangor, Maine, on September 28, 1950.

Bangor Hydro Electric News: April 1940: Volume 10, No.4, Hydraulic Maintenance Issue
Bangor Hydro Electric Company
Sample paragraph:
"It may be of interest to our readers to know that the duties of the Hydraulic Maintenance crew carry them, occasionally, to the more remote sections of our territory where we maintain and operate storage dams. One of Mr. [Fred] Murphy's duties is to make a periodic trip to three remote storage dams on the Piscataquis River namely, Schoodic, Seboois, and Endless Dams. There are no travelled ways to these dams and he makes the trip on foot, carrying with him a pack and camping out in the woods over night. These trips take anywhere from three days to a week, depending on the work required and weather conditions."
Many photographs show hydraulic equipment used in the late 1930s, early 1940s by the company as well as on-location photos at Treworgy Dam at Ellsworth Falls, Veazie, and in Milford.

Bangor Hydro Electric News: August 1940: Volume 10, No.8: Penobscot Transportation Company
Bangor Hydro Electric Company
Sample paragraphs:
Electric car service to Hampden should not become history without some word on the impromptu, farewell party accorded car No. 10 on the last trip Saturday night, July 27th [1940].
During the day there bad been casual conversations around the Hydro, "Are you going to see the last car off for Hampden?" "Do you realize that it was nearly forty-three years ago that Charlie Johnson ran the first street car to Hampden and that Charlie is going to take the last car down to Hampden tonight?" But, there were few that said they'd surely be at the waiting room on Post Office Sq. 11 P.M. on Saturday night.
An early arrival however saw two good-looking gentlemen in earnest conversation in the waiting room. None other than Charlie Smith, now retired, in conversation with Edwin Carvell, also retired. Mr. Carvell joined the Hydro as motorman on April 7th 1894, and Mr. Smith was conductor on the first car to Hampden on Dec. 1st, 1897, with Charlie Johnson ae motorman.

In some sections the grade will be raised considerably and in other sections the grade will be dropped. Throughout the entire stretch the road will be resurfaced even if the grade is'nt changed. All this means that the Hydro must bring its street car roadbed to a level to conform to the grade of the new highway. And that's what's going on at the present time and will continue for possibly two months or more. Bangor Hydro-Electric News was a monthly publication of Bangor Hydro Electric Company, which began in 1928 and ran to at least 1940. BH-E News should be of particular interest to those who have relatives who worked for Bangor Hydro during this time period, as many photographs are included in each issue and company personnel are named throughout these monthly reports. BH-E News covers not only the internal history of the Bangor office, but also regularly includes updates from offices in Harrington, Eastport, Ellsworth, Milford, Old Town, Lincoln, Machias, Bar Harbor, and elsewhere Bangor Hydro had offices. Individual issues of BH-E News often focus on projects of the company, offering photographs which reveal the history of electricity and railway systems in Bangor and in rural and seaside communities of Maine. [We intend to include all issues we own -- we do knowingly lack some issues as of April 2018].
Also found here are other papers relating to the Bangor Street Railway, also known as the Bangor Railway and Electric Company, which merged with Bangor Hydro Electric Company in 1924.
