Circa Date
1890-1892
Description
A team of horses pull a wagon down the hill on Hammond Street toward Main Street. The women walk on Columbia Street.
Knowles Printing Office, the building in the center, is one the corner of Franklin and Hammond. Address listed in city directories as 13 Hammond Street. Operated by Warren H. Knowles.
Magnification reveals the building behind the horse-drawn wagon to house Jeremiah Fenno Insurance at 19 Hammond. This business is not listed in the 1890 city directory, but does appear in the 1891 directory. This is the primary clue as to the date estimation.
Also the "new" city hall, built 1893-1894, is not visible. It would have cast a shadow over the street. It would stand where the right electric pole stands.
