Description
Located about a mile from downtown on the Kenduskeag Stream, Bangor's Lover's Leap, like many other similarly named promintories across the country, commemorates a young Native American couple who supposedly jumped to thear deaths in the stream after being refused permission to wed. A lengthy poem written by one H.G.R. for 'The Velocopede' in 1869 describes, with a stiff helping of poetic license, "...a tale about this stern old cliff--/A tale of days gone by, of live, and hate,a dn daring--/Passions that smoulder in the savage breast, /With tenfold vigor, unrestrained by fear/ Of social sneer, or educated scorn..."
