Abstract

A four and a half minute multi-media video combining photographs, audio, newspaper articles, and a pamphlet about the dedication of the Bangor-Brewer Joshua Chamberlain Bridge on November 11, 1954.

All photographs are courtesy of the Bangor Daily News. Most photographs taken by longtime BDN photographer Daniel Maher. The newspaper articles are also courtesy of the Bangor Daily News.

The pamphlet is in the Bangor Public Library's collection. It is available in full at https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/books_pubs/330/. One of the slides includes a piece of the ribbon from the dedication ceremony.

The audio is courtesy of the WLBZ via the University of Maine's Digital Commons. The full audio of the dedication is over 30 minutes long. It is available here: https://digitalcommons.library.umaine.edu/wlbz_station_records/131/. This site also includes a transcript of the audio of the dedication ceremony.

Most of the photographs show various stages of construction of the bridge, which began on May 12, 1953. These photographs include dredging of the Penobscot, placing the supports in the river, aerial views of Bangor and Brewer as work progressed, and various business of the time. There are a handful of pictures taken at the dedication ceremony and a few others which show the bridge just after it was opened to the public.
