A photo of Richard Small Ayer, age 32 as a first lieutenant of the 4th Maine Infantry. Mustered in June 15, 1861, promoted to Captain Co. A December 1861. Discharged for disability March 22, 1862. He was a U.S. Congressman from Virginia in 1870-71, and in the Maine House of Representatives in 1888.
